“Masque of the Red Death”

Beneath the pale glow of a counterfeit moon, two figures dance as if time has stopped — their grace both defiant and fragile. Around them, masked faces linger in the shadows: witnesses, voyeurs, survivors.

This painting draws its title and spirit from Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death,” where humanity’s attempt to escape mortality turns into theatre. Created in the aftermath of our own global pandemic, the work reflects on that same paradox — how isolation, fear, and spectacle intertwined, and how intimacy became both dangerous and sacred.

The ancient pillars evoke collapsing certainty; the masks, our shared façade of control. Yet at the center, two bodies still reach for one another — proof that love and connection remain the last acts of courage in any apocalypse.
